1:30pm – 5:00pm –  Working with 2010 Census Data


  • Getting data from (where and how to get the data)
  • Join the Census 2000 tabular data to spatial data – (census population point data)
  • perform subset,
  • buffer around population centers and apply groupings … etc?

5:00pm – 6:00pm – Homework

  • Explore data options to use within ArcGIS, (Weather dependant? Bring a raincoat!)

Final Goal: Map that has cities with buffer with graph or data summary… points within buffer or those outside buffer…  maps will show difference in city size, dates and buffer size… (maybe the final map will show these things… but this session can create the data, in preparation for the cartography session)

    • Feature Symbology, size and color

Goal:  Creating a map product / project that bring these layers and data sources together into a project that can be used in the classroom.  Final Map proving or dis-proving urban heat island.
